The Heart of our Pondo Trail™

We are not a hiking company. We do not aspire to take people for walks or on adventures and we do not aspire to serve them good food or increase their knowledge of the areas we frequent. These, although all important, are just by-products of our real focus. Rather, we aspire to offer a series of emotionally driven and highly memorable moments, and every member of the Wild Child Africa Team focuses on how to create these moments within their particular area of our business. At the end of each Pondo Trail, our guests should leave us in a changed emotional state – they, quite simply, must just feel better.

Crafted with Intention

The Pondo Trail is not a path or hiking route, anyone can take you for a walk in Pondoland. It is an experience curated, developed and exclusively owned by Wild Child Africa. From its inception, The Pondo Trail™ was designed to be different. Wild Child Africa didn’t simply map out a trail; we have curated an experience that honours the land, its people, and its stories. Some hiking trails are measured by the degree of difficulty, or by the level of the natural beauty on offer; while others are measured by something far less tangible. The Pondo Trail® is one of these rare journeys; an experience crafted to immerse, challenge, inspire and transform. It is a high-end eco-tourism experience that carefully blends barefoot luxury and remote wilderness; and our hand-picked and highly trained guides use this as the canvas to achieve our goal of creating a truly life-changing experience.

What We Hope You’ll Feel

We don’t just want you to hike our Pondo Trail™ – we want you to feel it. We want to offer you a rare freedom to disconnect from the noise of modern life and reconnect with the wild, to let go of the busyness of everyday life, and to take time for introspection and re-evaluating priorities. And, we want our guests to feel joy! We want them to laugh, smile and dance on the sand. We want them to connect with their inner wild, to soak up the natural beauty of Pondoland and be wild and free.

But, the Pondo Trail™ is also a call to action. It is a collection of inspired, like-minded individuals who are driven to help preserve this incredible yet fragile environment, and carry with them the echoes of this land long after their boots have left its soil.

Daily Itinerary

Day 1

Day 1

Our adventure starts in Port Edward if you choose the ocean safari transfer, or at Mtentu if you would rather travel by road. The day then offers incredible diversity in a mostly forgotten wilderness through the Mkambathi Nature Reserve; grass plains with a large range of antelope, a picnic lunch beneath a crystal-clear waterfall and finishing with sundowners overlooking the Msikaba estuary. Overnight at Msikaba Beach Camp. Distance +- 15km.

Optional – A boat transfer from Port Edward to Mtentu not only misses out a long and bumpy dirt road but allows for a phenomenal ocean safari to view dolphins, whales and the sardine migration in season. Highly recommended!

Day 2

An early wakeup will coax you out of bed for a sunrise paddle up the Msikaba estuary for coffee and rusks before returning for breakfast at camp. The trail continues South from Msikaba to Luphatana past the site of the famous Grosvenor shipwreck, conveniently situated beside a protected beach, perfect for a lunchbreak and siesta. Champagne Mile and the famous Wild Coast salt-water-shower marks the end of the day’s walk and bring us to the rustic Luphatana Beach Camp where we will rest our heads for the night. Distance +- 18km.

Day 3

This day is a mighty one! Filled with majestic landmarks and breath-taking viewpoints. Waterfall Bluff, Bessie’s Cave and Cathedral Rock are only a few of the highlights that can be looked forward to. Overnight at Mbotyi River Lodge. Distance +- 19km.

Day 4

As in every good story, we save the best for last. The short stretch from Mbotyi to Manteku is the epitome of this beautiful coastline; boasting five secluded, Milkwood framed beaches, linked only by secret cattle paths. Manteku’s private beach and estuary offers the perfect end to your life-changing journey. Distance +- 10km.

DAY 5
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast and return home sporting the glorious “Pondo Glow”
